If your external hard drive is more than 2TB it is probably formatted in GPT instead of standard MBR, which cannot be read by 32bit Operating Systems such as WIndows XP. have a peek here

It used to be simpler to format c: /s (for system files for floppies & HD) Now stuff is more hidden.
